Is corn based fuel better?
Summary: As the battle rages on over what renewable fuel source will replace current oil based fuels we have to be sure that the answer to that question does not just create other environmental problems. According to a report from the National Academy of Sciences creating biofuels can cause adverse affects on the environment, especially corn-based biofuels, the problem is that as we up the production of corn to make these fuels we also increase the amounts of Nitrogen, and Phosphorous in to the runoff from the fertilizers and pesticides used in this process. These chemicals are major sources of water pollution and account for several “dead zones” that are already beginning to occur in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Chesapeake Bay. If this growth process is not thought out very carefully it will increase an already volatile fresh water problem. |
