the importance of good nutrition
How do you define good nutrition? Good nutrition to me is not just eating right most of the time, its knowledge about food and how different types of foods will affect your body. Some good examples of this are foods that people think are good for us, but really they are loaded with ingredients that are bad for us, for example wheat bread, unless it specifically says 100% wheat it is probably loaded with flour and sugar and many of the same ingredients you would find in your standard white bread. Good nutrition is also a matter of knowing what is true and what is not when it comes down to eating properly, for example the atkins diet is a great way to lose weight but it’s temporary in most cases because your body needs carbohydrates and the weight most people lose on atkins is water, however millions of people went wild over the atkins diet like it was some sort miracle cure instead of balanced nutrition. One of the main concerns with dieting is that its not a permanent solution, most people that diet tend to gain back all or sometimes even more than what they lost, which can lead to eating disorders and health problems. Another common problem we are seeing these days is the side affects of diet pills, there are several on the market currently that if taken by the obese can double the chance of getting cancer, triple the chances of heart disease and even make them 40 times more likely to get diabetes. Also most diets cause the dieter to lose lean body mass as well as fat, loss of lean body mass will cause the individual to burn less calories and after going thru this cycle several times an individual can cause real damage to their metabolism causing them to retain extra weight and making it harder to lose fat in the end. The best way to lose weight is balance, what most people don’t realize is that with a simple body fat test and some math you can figure out your metabolic rate, then its just a matter of calories taken in vs calories burned per day. If I had to say what diet or lifestyle worked the best for losing weight I would say that the south beach diet makes the most sense, it has a good balance of nutrients but keeps you away from bad carbs that can affect your insulin and change how your body burns calories. All of the years I was in the health club business the south beach diet was the one that the most people stuck to and saw permanent results, so in this case I’m my own source. These are some of the myths that I heard all of the time in the health club business, the first one and my favorite was that doing sit ups would get rid of belly fat, it was really common for people to believe that working muscles in one specific area would burn fat in that area. Another myth that I found to be really funny was people who believed eating after 6pm would cause you to gain weight, while it’s not good to eat tons of calories late at night your body burns so many calories a day whether you eat them all at once or spread them out. This brings us to our next myth, spreading food out in small meals will increase your metabolism, I guess whether this myth is true or not depends on your definition of metabolism. While spreading your food out will make you feel better and your body function better, it will not increase the amount of calories that your body burns in any given day. A common myth amongst woman Is that lifting weights will make you gain weight, first of all lifting weights and increasing lean body mass would burn more calories and in the end make you burn more body fat and look leaner, second of all less than 1% of the female population even has the genes to get big or build more than a little bit of muscle. This may or may not be a myth but I believe that it is, you only need to work out 3 days per week for 20 minutes to get in shape. Now this is what scientist say but I have never seen anyone that only worked out this much that ever saw any results, your heart might be a little healthier but you won’t see any significant results from only an hour a week. Not eating right and not exercising can create a very negative impact on all aspects of a person’s life. |
