why people hate the obese
Friday, April 4, 2008 why are people so mad at the obese? (part1) Why are people so mad at the obese? (part 1). Aaron Surprenant www.aaroncares.com March 28, 2008 Recently I have been working on setting up an online support group for the obese, while spending hours each day scouring the web for ideas on how to market my site, and find relevant information I have come to the conclusion that people are really ignorant when it comes to obesity. I started writing this as one big article but I found that there was just way to much information to tackle all in one article, so I have decided to break this up in to several articles over the next couple of weeks. Let’s start with what really sparked my interest about what people were saying on the internet about the obese and overweight people of the world. That is the fact that many people including government officials believe that we are the cause or at least part of the cause of our poor health care system because of the drain that the obese put on the health care system by costing billions of dollars each year. A lot of people believe since we are at higher risks of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and the list goes on and on that we are the sole problem with the health care system. Because of this some politicians like Felix Ortiz a member of the New York Assembly are proposing laws that would help to curb our eating habits by placing special taxes on certain foods(I’ll cover this topic in a later article). The point is that the politicians see us as a gold mine, they figure if they can make us healthier that this will free up billions of dollars to spend someplace else. I believe that this is just not true, and there are sources out there that agree with me, as well as people that have written articles in the past retracting what they said. But recently in a Dutch study the facts played out differently, one thing the number crunchers fail to mention is that most obese people have a much short lifespan, now far be it from me to get excited about the fact that we die younger I’m not saying this is a positive thing I’m just saying that the facts are just not correct when it comes to what obesity really cost’s our nation. The fact of the matter is that the longer a person lives the more of a burden they put on the system, if scientist were to cure obesity tomorrow and we all lived to be a ripe 80 years old this would put more of a burden on the system than anything else, social security (or what is left of it) would collapse much faster than anticipated, and many other burdens would be placed on our infrastructure. Again I’m not excited about the fact that we die younger and are more prone to disease because of our weight that’s not what I’m saying, the point I’m trying to make is that nobody can just waive their magic wand and make it go away, it’s going to take time, education, and a lot empathy to conquer this disease. I believe that the only solution is to focus on the root causes of obesity, I don’t think all the obese just got up one day and said “ah today is the day I become obese and ruin my life”. Like most other diseases available to us today there is usually a root cause to the problem, for example Depression and lack of exercise were the causes of my obesity. While running one day when I was in good shape I through my back out and couldn’t exercise for a couple months, of course I kept eating like I was still running on a regular basis because you just don’t think about it, that lead to weight gain, which lead to depression and more weight gain, which lead to sleep apnea and more weight gain, and even more depression, and the rest is history. My point is that there is a root cause to your disease whether its stress from work or marriage, or a rough childhood we all have our ghosts to deal with before we can start the journey back to healthy. In my next article I’ll talk more about the government’s master plan to heal us all, stay tuned. to read all my blogs follow this link: http://aaroncares.rsitez.com//blog/myblogs.php?profileid=9 |
